Project Highway Wilding has its own YouTube Channel!

Highway Wilding is a collaborative research & monitoring project between Parks Canada, the Western Transportation Institute (WTI), Miistakis Institute, Wilburforce Foundation and Woodcock Foundation that focuses on getting wildlife safely “across the road” in Banff National Park and beyond.

Mayor Urban Design Awards

Every two years, the Mayor’s Urban Design Awards (MUDA) celebrates the best of Calgary’s new urban design, landscape design and architecture. The awards recognize the distinctive and cherished buildings and spaces which make our city unique and its citizens proud. The City of Calgary is now accepting MUDA 2011 submissions with a deadline of 4:00 pm, Thursday, September 15, 2011.

Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) 2011 Congress

EVDS Dean Dr. Nancy Pollock-Ellwand participated in the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) Congress held in Iqaluit, Nunavut July 14-17, 2011 - the furthest point north for the Congress in its 77 year history.

At the Congress Dr. Pollock-Ellwand presented her paper Planning Innovations with Cultural Landscapes: Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The presentation provided a comparison of approaches to conserving aboriginal cultural landscapes in 3 countries with similarly significant indigenous populations.

EVDS' Danielle Rowlands makes Team Canada!

Environmental Design’s Danielle Rowlands is one of just twenty-six women selected to play rugby for Team Canada in the 2011 Senior Women’s Nations Cup being hosted this August in Oakville, Ontario. This marks Danielle’s second trip to Nations Cup.

“It’s very exciting to have the opportunity to represent Canada again this year. We’ll be playing against teams like England, South Africa and the United States – really athletic and well trained squads. I’m really looking forward to it. Thanks to everyone who has supported me in my rugby, it is greatly appreciated!”

U.S Ambassador visits Solar Decathlon construcation site

In addition to the much-anticipated royal tour, another important visit to Calgary took place on Thursday, July 7. The U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Jacobson, was on Campus visiting the construction site of University of Calgary's Technological Residence, Traditional Living, or TRTL (pronounced 'turtle'), Solar Decathlon project.

The passing of Marino Vardabasso

It is with great sadness that EVDS has heard of the passing of Marino Vardabasso. Marino was the faculty's IT person for an amazing 16 years. He will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and worked with here.

Marino's funeral will be held on July 12th at 10:30 a.m. at the McInnis and Holloway Funeral Home at 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.

The Miistakis Institute featured on Ward9TV

The Miistakis Institute, an Environmental Design affiliated research institute, was recently featured on Ward9TV with Alderman Gian-Carlos Carra. Discussing the Living with Coyotes Program, a joint initiative between the Miistakis Institute and the Department of Geography, the Institute has developed a monitoring system to track the movement of coyotes here in Calgary.
