EVDS Architecture graduates exhibit final master projects

Graduating students from the environmental design faculty’s (EVDS) architecture program (MArch) are hosting a gallery opening to celebrate year-end projects.

During their third and final year of study, students participate in a variety of senior research studios, exposing them to different approaches to architecture, work that is displayed in this final show. It features investigations into structurally intelligent SWARMS, responsive architecture, modular affordable housing, as well as projects from the Barcelona and Melbourne study abroad programs.

Well that was interesting. We just finished an online search wondering where climate change, humanity’s most profound challenge, and renewable energy, the world’s fastest growing energy sector, fit into Alberta’s provincial election party platforms. The result? “Reader has finished searching the document, no matches were found.”

In a world of computer geeks, there is perhaps none geekier than the University of Calgary’s own professor Tom Keenan. This is a dude who taught Canada’s first course on hacking before anybody called it that; he knows better than most the power and pitfalls of the Internet, and takes delight in explaining in great, nerdy detail how “some people out there are doing bad things with technology” (as he put it in a recent TED Talk).

Students graduating from the environmental design faculty’s architecture program hold two student shows celebrating year-end projects.

The first show on Friday, April 20 at Art Central, features the Master’s Degree Projects (MDP) completed by students graduating from the four-year Master of Architecture (MArch) program. These year-long projects include innovative models, ranging from urban healthcare to speculative frameworks for countercultural resistance and everything in between.

Approved by city council in 2008, the plan has a C-Train line running up the Nose Hill Creek corridor (along the CP Rail right of way) from Zoo Station to Harvest Hills (96th Ave.) and then north-westward towards Coventry Hills, Panorama Hills and, eventually, Airdrie.

Rare Image Captured of Lynx Using Highway-Wildlife Overpass in Banff National Park

Researchers in Banff National Park have captured an image of the elusive lynx doing something rarely seen – it was using a highway-wildlife overpass to cross the Trans-Canada Highway. This unique image, captured by motion-sensitive cameras, offers an extraordinary glimpse of an animal that many Canadians have never seen.

Alumni of the environmental design faculty (EVDS), Chris vander Hoek and Maria Landry along with UBC student Eugene Dening, have won Alley of Light Project for their recycled modular lighting system.

A grassroots initiative, the Alley of Light Project aims to revitalize underused park and alley space in half a block north of Jasper Avenue downtown Edmonton.

Miistakis Institute and partners launch program to make roads safer for wildlife

The University of Calgary-based Miistakis Institute, in partnership with Parks Canada, the Woodcock Foundation, the Wilburforce Foundation, and the Western Transportation Institute have launched one of the world’s most current and comprehensive resources for transportation planners and decision makers in roadway ecology, an emerging field of study.

American building designer Preston Scott Cohen coming to Calgary

Celebrated building designer Preston Scott Cohen is speaking at the downtown campus this week as part of the Design Matters lecture series presented by the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS).

Cohen’s architecture encompasses diverse scales and types of buildings including houses, educational facilities, cultural institutions and urban designs for private owners, institutions, government agencies and corporations.
