The EVDS website regularly features the work of our faculty members. Below are those whose work has been featured to date. Also, please visit our faculty profile pages.

  • C-Hachem.jpg
Dr. Caroline Hachem recently joined EVDS as an Assistant Professor in the architecture program. Her research focusses on developing a holistic design approach to buildings and neighbourhoods to improve quality of life while reducing environmental impacts.
  • Web_Paul_Galpern_s.jpg
Galpern comes to the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) by way of the University of Ottawa and the University of Manitoba where his research has combined genetic and other types of ecological data to contribute to environmental planning. An ongoing project of his uses genetics to track the movements of boreal woodland caribou, an animal listed as Threatened under Canada's Species At Risk Act.
  • Greg_Morrow_photo.jpg
Greg Morrow returned to Canada after 15 years abroad to join the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) in November 2013. His background combines research, teaching, and professional practice in Canada and the United States. Morrow brings to EVDS a multidisciplinary background in architecture, urban design, city planning and real estate development, which he combines with research interests in urban & planning history, smart growth, and sustainability.

Since 2000, Dr. Bev Sandalack has led an innovative, award-winning research group in EVDS. The Urban Lab deals with urban design, planning and development issues, and is committed to research-based pedagogy.
  • Marc_Boutin_BW.jpg
Marc Boutin, and his firm the Marc Boutin Architectural Collaborative, are interested in developing Calgary’s public realm as a socially and culturally relevant landscape. A number of recent interdisciplinary design projects have explored this interest, including the First Street Underpass, winner of a 2012 Canadian Architect Award, Calgary Soldiers Memorial, and the Memorial Pathway, winner of a 2012 RAIC Mayor’s Urban Design Award. Another such project is the Poppy Plaza, winner of a 2010 Canadian Architect Award.

Design is often referred to as an applied art. This perception can seem self-evident given the activities designers typically undertake in pursuing their profession. Designers sketch, draw, make maquettes, develop CAD models, make physical models, generate specifications, and oversee the fabrication of their design intent. Such activities do require skill, and a large part of design education can revolve around the development of such skills.
  • Tang Lee BW.jpg
Much of the substance of my teaching comes from observing and admiring others, as well as absorbing the environment that surrounds us which I also try to put into practice in my firm. My practice includes building technologies, solar heating, energy efficiencies, healthy indoor environments and durability, which are all important aspects of sensible sustainable building designs. Environmental designers envision the future and then plan and design so that their projects will remain relevant
  • Sasha Tsenkova-LR (2).jpg
Dr. Tsenkova is a Professor of Planning and International Development at EVDS. Her research on comparative housing policies and sustainable cities is disseminated in over 34 articles, research reports and books published in the last two years. Her recent book Energy Efficiency in Housing Management: Policies and Practice in Eleven Countries is the first comparative evaluation of the economic, social and environmental benefits of energy efficiency retrofits in the social housing sector. She is the editor of the first International Encyclopedia of Housing & Home, a major reference work released in 2012, edited by distinguished international scholars with exceptional reputation.

Throughout my career I have been drawn to places where systems overlap. In ecology, these ‘ecotones’ are often biodiversity ‘hot spots’. Academically, these places form the habitat of transdisciplinarity – environs wherein diverse scholars and practitioners mingle their expertise for the co-creation of new knowledge. It is here that the lines between the natural and social science become necessarily blurred.
