University honours work of one of Canada’s most treasured architects

The Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) celebrates the lifetime achievements of distinguished Canadian architect, Raymond Moriyama, with an honorary doctorate and public event on Monday, June 10.

Moriyama is one of Canada’s most celebrated architects and considered by many a hero for rising above his past as a former internee of camps during the Second World War, due to his Japanese heritage.

Human impacts on ecosystem worse than thought

Humans have an impact on the ecosystems in which they live — this is uncontroversial. However, the question of how exactly humans affect interactions within an ecosystem is still up for debate. New research by University of Calgary ecologists is shedding light on the scale of these impacts.

It was treeplanting that triggered environmentalist Nikki Heck’s epiphany: working in industry was the best way to make a difference.

“I got frustrated being the person putting the trees in the ground,” says Heck, 33, an environmental adviser with the electric utility company AltaLink. “I wanted to be the person making the decision about how the land was managed in the first place.”

The Calgarian was an aspiring biologist when she treeplanted during her university years. The job paid her tuition and opened her eyes.

TEDx Calgary event brings new energy to campus

On Saturday, May 11, the University of Calgary sponsored TEDx Calgary’s Energy: Full Spectrum. More than 300 participants learned from energy experts on topics ranging from the natural laws that govern our universe, to the energy that drives a creative mind.

Human impact on natural world underestimated, study finds

A comprehensive five-year study by University of Calgary ecologists indicates that two accepted principles of how ecosystems naturally operate could be overwhelmed by the effects of human activity.

“Understanding the significance of the impact that humans have on ecosystems is a critical component in formulating long-term and effective conservation strategies,” says principal investigator Marco Musiani, associate professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design.

Digitized interviews with prominent Canadian architects now available

The university’s oral history collection now contains audio recordings of interviews with prominent Canadian architects who have shaped Canadian architecture in Alberta, B.C. and Ontario between the early 1900s and the late 1960s. Some of these , such as Arthur Erickson have set their mark internationally as well.

U of C and MRU Students Team Up for Solar Decathlon 2013

University of Calgary and Mount Royal University students from various faculties have started constructing their entry into the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.

Known as Borealis, the steel and wood modular solar home will be Team Alberta’s third entry into the biannual international competition. Only 20 teams are chosen to compete each year.

EVDS Design Team Finalist in Battery Park Chair Competition in New York

An EVDS-based design team has been named as a finalist in The Battery Conservancy Americas "Draw Up A Chair" Design Competition in New York City.

With over 675 submissions to this international competition the EVDS team consisting of Assistant Professor Jason Johnson and Master of Architecture students Mahdiar Ghaffarian, Guy Gardner, and Ryan Cook, are one group of only 50 finalists.
