The Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS), in collaboration with the City of Calgary Public Art Program, present The Intersection of Art and Architecture in City Building to complement the grand opening of The Bow building in downtown Calgary June 4.

Public art can take many forms, from large sculpture pieces to murals and even individual street performers. Art attracts attention, applause and sometimes ridicule. Architecture provokes similar responses. Both art and architecture draw emotion. We can be delighted by artistic expression, inspired by a soaring structure, brought to tears by a war memorial, or challenged by an abstract painting.

On June 4 the Faculty of Environmental Design and the City of Calgary Public Art Program present the Intersection of Art and Architecture in City Building at the EPCOR Centre’s Jack Singer Concert Hall from 7-9 p.m.

The event features keynote speakers James Barnes, partner with Foster + Partners, one of the world’s most innovative architecture and integrated design practices (responsible for the building design) and world-renowned artist Jaume Plensa, who created Wonderland (the public art piece for the building).

Following the presentations, speakers will participate in a panel discussion on the role of art and architecture in urban planning and city-building, with Nancy Pollock-Ellwand, EVDS dean, and Rollin Stanley, general manager of Planning, Development and Assessment at the City of Calgary.

“The Bow is an important iconic building, occupying a premier location in downtown Calgary and as a result, draws the community’s attention to architecture, urban design and progressive ideas,” says Pollock-Ellwand. “Calgary strives to be a world-class city and its urban landscape requires world-class architects and artists to join our own outstanding design community who, together, are making Calgary the city we imagine.”

Tickets are $20, $10 for students, and will be available at the door. Cash only. For more information visit: http://evds.ucalgary.ca/event/intersection-art-and-architecture-city-building.
