Alumnus Andrew McConnell Vertebrae Staircase Featured on Arch Daily

Inspired by the spine of a whale, the Vertebrae Staircase is not simply mimicry of organic form but an exploration in shaping structure. Much of the design work went into refining the single component, vertebra, that mate with each other creating a unified spine running from floor plate to floor plate. These interlocking vertebrae create a rigid and self-supporting structure.

A Danish Approach to Design - Public lecture with 3XN Founder Kim Nielsen

The Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) welcomes Kim Nielsen, founder and principal of the Danish architecture firm 3XN to campus February 12 for a public lecture.

Acclaimed architect, Kim Nielsen is one of the three founders and current Principal of 3XN - a design studio based in Copenhagen, Denmark, known for its preference for social and humane architecture, and projects that demand a high level of detail and workmanship.

As the popularity of remote-controlled aircraft and drones takes off as the technology becomes more affordable, one Calgary researcher is concerned amateur aviators are flying headlong into trouble.

Christopher Hugenholtz, who uses aerial drones in his research, said he’s concerned about the chances of a hobbyist damaging property or hurting someone after losing control of an unmanned aircraft.

Team Alberta eyes solar home project

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an international competition that challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered homes that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive.

For the third time, a team of students from the University of Calgary has been selected to participate, one of only two Canadians to make the shortlist of 20; the other being Team Ontario (Queen's, Carleton and Algonquin).
