The Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) and the Institute for Public Health will host a public lecture on urban resilience featuring international thought leaders on flood design, this Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at the University of Calgary’s downtown campus.

The lecture, After the Flood, will cap off the daylong makeCalgary symposium, and will be moderated by EVDS alumnus and makeCalgary Talk editor, Lance Robinson. The evening will feature keynote speakers James Russell and Stephen Cassell, both based in New York City, as well as discussion and an exhibition of provocative student design strategies for improving the resilience of Calgary's downtown riverfront.

Russell is an architecture critic for Bloomberg News and the author of The Agile City: Building Well Being and Wealth in an Era of Climate Change, and Cassell a principal at Architecture Research Office, a firm practicing architecture and urbanism, the two were extensively involved in the recovery and rebuild of NYC following Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012.

“We must prepare the next generation of city builders to consider the quality of the communities we all want to live, invest and thrive in,” says Nancy Pollock-Ellwand, dean of EVDS. “Our students will engage in a complex world where effective collaboration must occur with diverse disciplines and community stakeholders – from design and planning to public health, artists and engineers. Resilience demands this approach.”

Tickets are available at the door. Admission to the public lecture is free for students and $10 for non-students. For more information, click here.
