Dr. Nancy Pollock-Ellwand has been reappointed as Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, effective July 1, 2014 for a six-year term.

In April of this year, Pollock-Ellwand indicated her willingness to be considered for reappointment. An Advisory Decanal Review Committee was then established to consider Pollock-Ellwand’s performance during her first term and the appropriateness of her reappointment. The committee invited and reviewed commentary from those within the faculty and from the external community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide input.

Pollock-Ellwand began a five-year term as Dean on January 1, 2010, having served since 2006 as Head and Chair of the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design and Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Adelaide, Australia. Prior to this appointment, Pollock-Ellwand was a Visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo, Laboratory of Ecosystem Science and Landscape Planning.  From 1989 through 2006, Pollock-Ellwand was with the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development at the University of Guelph.  Pollock-Ellwand has degrees in Architecture (MArch Manitoba), Planning (PhD Waterloo) and Landscape Architecture (BLA Guelph) which informs her role as Dean of an interdisciplinary design school.  Her research interests are in urban design, urban reform history, cultural landscapes, and heritage conservation.  Pollock-Ellwand continues to serve at an international level with the International Council on Monuments and Sites assisting with World Heritage nomination reviews, and emerging conservation policies; and, at a local level on several bodies including Calgary’s Urban Design Review Panel.

During her last decanal term, Pollock-Ellwand led a number of notable achievements for the Faculty of Environmental Design helping it realize its ambition to become the leading interdisciplinary design school in Canada.  She helped position the Faculty as the only institute in Alberta delivering accredited graduate programs in Architecture and Planning.  The Faculty also delivers thesis-based design scholarship at Master and PhD levels.

Under Pollock-Ellwand’s leadership the Faculty re-launched the Master of Planning (MPlan) design-based degree, and, recently delivered for government approval a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) proposal.  Building on the well-respected Barcelona semester, she helped expand international opportunities for students by developing a strong relationship with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, and the City of Melbourne.

I would like to thank the members of the Advisory Decanal Review Committee, which I chaired, for undertaking the extensive consultation process. They were: Frank Maurer, vice president (research) representative; Noel Keough, Faculty of EVDS tenured academic staff representative; Branko Kolarevic, Faculty of EVDS tenured academic staff representative; Tang Lee, Faculty of EVDS tenured academic staff representative; David Monteyne, Faculty of EVDS tenured academic staff representative; Brian Moorman, GFC representative; Loren Falkenberg, GFC representative; Jim Dewald, decanal representative; Paddy Campbell, AUPE representative; Devon Lavigne, MaPS representative; Carsten Krueger, SU representative; Cari Gulbrandsen, GSA representative; John Baker, Faculty Association representative; Rob Adamson, external representative and Stephen Mahler, external representative.

Pollock-Ellwand has shown her dedication to the Faculty as a visionary leader with a commitment to excellence and research in our community and on the global stage.

Please join me in congratulating Nancy Pollock-Ellwand on her reappointment.
