MArch students Sek Chow and Elaine Chan recently placed in the top ten in the national Steel Structures Education Foundation's (SSEF) Architectural Student Design Competition. The competition was created to give students the unique opportunity to enroll in professional programs in Architecture in Canada. The competition provides incentive for teams to explore the detailed design of exposed steel systems. The competition consists of two aspects: the requirement for build-able details, primarily utilizing structural steel and the second, and the collaboration with the steel fabrication industry on those details. Such collaboration is an important component of this competition, as a secondary objective is to expose students to both the opportunities and restraints inherent in realizing conceptual design. Chow and Chan were students of sessional instructor Brad Braun's Structures course. Their entry into the competition was conceptualized through their course work with Braun.
