The Faculty of Environmental Design welcomes to campus Joshua Vermillion, assistant professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for a week-long student workshop, Design Matters public lecture, and gallery opening.

Vermillion specializes in the architectural applications of computational design methods, digital fabrication tools, robotics and responsive systems, advanced materials, and other emerging technologies.

He co-ordinates and manages the SimLab at UNLV, a fully equipped fabrication, simulation, and prototyping facility within the School of Architecture.

Vermillion joins EVDS for the Taylor Visiting Lectureship, a one-week design studio established in honour of Dale Taylor, past director of the department’s architecture program. He will lead senior architecture students in an intensive design workshop that will investigate relational interactions and systemic disturbances while prototyping with simple electrical and magnetic components.

“Each year we bring in designers and makers who challenge our students to engage emerging technologies as tools for design,” says Jason Johnson, assistant professor of architecture at EVDS. “We are delighted that Joshua Vermillion will join us for the sixth annual Taylor Seminar. His extensive work in the areas of digital design and making across a number of scales is sure to inspire our students. I look forward to seeing what they build this year.”

Prior to his appointment at UNLV, Vermillion taught in the Department of Architecture at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. While there he co-founded i.M.A.D.E, an applied research and immersive learning institute that brings students, faculty, and design professionals together with regional industry partners to work on mutually beneficial projects utilizing design, computation, and fabrication.

His Design Matters public lecture will explore selected work designed, fabricated, and assembled with students and faculty at Ball State University and UNLV in partnership with local and regional industries. He will highlight the benefits of partnering with industry to integrate projects into the academic environment.

Design Matters with Joshua Vermillion takes place Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus, 906 8th Ave. SW. Admission is free for students and $10 for non-students.

An exhibition opening of Vermillion’s profession work and EVDS student material produced in the week-long workshop will be features in a special gallery show, opening Friday, Feb. 21 in the Kasian Gallery (PF 2182) from 6-8 p.m. General public welcome.

The Design Matters lecture series is made possible by EVDS’ sponsors Gibbs Gage Architects, Section 23 and Caron McCullock Associates LTD. Click here for more information.
