The Environmental Design Students’ Association (EVDS SA) hosts annual networking events to connect students with practicing professionals, and strengthen ties between the faculty and community. The next event takes place Thursday, Feb. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The event provides Master of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Design students with the opportunity to meet representatives from design firms, municipalities, and other professional organizations from Calgary and the surrounding area.

The event includes several rounds of small group discussion between EVDS students and various firms, municipalities, and other professional representatives which serves to strengthen bonds between the faculty, EVDS students, and those groups.

“It is always exciting to meet people from the industry and learn about the wide range of projects the firms are currently working on," states Sophia Yi, Master of Architecture student and event co-coordinator.

Firms in attendance get the opportunity to see what EVDS students are working on both academically and creatively, share their experiences in the field, and network with other representatives in attendance.

Throughout the event, students will showcase their academic work, with individual portfolio pieces being displayed throughout the faculty space, and their own creative art work in the Small Frame Show, which will be featured in a silent auction at the end of the evening.

In years past, the networking events helped students make connections that assisted them in securing volunteering positions, summer internships, and career placements.

“We have been learning a lot about planning theory, and have seen firsthand several examples of innovative planning projects from around the world, but it is quite beneficial for us to connect with people working in the Calgary regional context,” states Liam Cummings, VP (External) for EVDS SA, event co-coordinator, and Master of Planning student. “It gives us a more complete understanding of the professions that we are gearing up to enter in the near future.”

The Small Frame Show silent auction portion of the evening is open to the public and features the creative work of students. Join EVDS from 7-8 p.m. in the Kasian Gallery (PF 2182) for the auction. Click here for more information.
