Hosted by the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS), the Design Matters lecture series welcomes to Calgary a range of important practitioners to explore issues in architecture, urban design, and landscape ecology. This month the series welcomes Spanish designer Andreu Arriola.

Arriola is the founder of Arriola & Fiol Arquitectes, a design firm established in Barcelona, Spain with his partner Camen Fiol in 1987.

The practice aims to explore the interrelation between architecture and urbanism by shortening the traditional distance between the two disciplines. Projects are approached as an opportunity to develop creative solutions that fully address the needs and aspirations of users.

Their firm sees public space as a combined structure of different streets and squares as the essence, the substance of coexistence, interaction and the redundancy that shared life brings.

“Andreu's work within the office of Arriola + Fiol has been acknowledged on the international stage as a fresh and robust vision towards how design can catalyze a city's public realm, lending much needed amenity and pleasure in how we use and celebrate in our cities,” notes Marc Boutin, associate professor of architecture at EVDS.

Join EVDS for Design Matters with Andreu Arriola Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Downtown Campus, 906 8th Ave. S.W., from 6-7:30 p.m. Students are free. Non-students are $10.

Arriola’s presentation will explore the current work of Arriola & Fiol Arqitectes’ Urban Civic Projects, identify conflict areas in urban neighbourhoods and recommend practical solution to transform these areas into civic outdoor rooms.

“Together with his partner Carmen Fiol, Andreu has explored and designed for the cities in Spain, France, Italy, and is currently working on a project in Calgary focused on the Civic District along with the Marc Boutin Architectural Collaborative."

The overarching intention of the firm’s Urban Civic Projects is to establish a new project for urban regeneration founded on the principles of design excellence, social well-being and environmental responsibility within a viable economic and legislative framework.

The Design Matters lecture series is made possible by EVDS’ sponsors Gibbs Gage Architects, Section 23 and Caron McCullock Associates LTD.
