Master of Planning Scholarships & Awards


All program applicants are automatically considered for our entrance scholarships with their program application. Individuals who are selected for an entrance scholarship will be notified in their offer of admission letter.

Each year we offer the following entrance scholarships:

  • EVDS MPlan Entrance Scholarships (approximately 5-7) ranging in value from $1500-$5000, all Canadian and International students are eligible.
  • Queen Elizabeth II Entrance Scholarship (1) valued at $7200, Canadian students only.
  • Brown & Associates Planning Group Entrance Scholarship (1) valued at $4000 (or two valued at $2000 each).
  • Chancellor Cuthbertson Environmental Design Graduate Entrance Scholarship (1 every other year, odd years) valued at $10,000, both Canadian and International students are eligible.

In addition, we offer the following entrance scholarship by application:

  • EVDS Dean’s Advisory Council Entrance Scholarship, deadline to apply May 1st

Graduate Awards Competition (GAC)

This is a University wide competition. The awards you are eligible to apply for within this competition can be found on Appendix A of the application form. Please cross-reference these awards on the Graduate Awards Database (link is at the top of this appendix) to determine if any match your study interests/eligibility before starting the application process. Click the link above for information, application form and guidelines.

Please note that if you will complete your degree requirements prior to September of the application deadline year you are not eligible for this competition. Scholarships from this competition are awarded in the fall.

Application deadline to EVDS Wednesday January 25, 2017 | Referee deadline to EVDS Monday January 30, 2017

*All GAC applications must include a research proposal or statement of study. This applies to students in the professional programs as well as the thesis programs.*

If you intend to apply, please consider registering for and attending the workshop: Writing at the Graduate Level: Strategies for Developing Research Proposals. For more information and to register: My Grad Skills The workshop is normally offered in October of each year.


Alberta Graduate Student Scholarship (AGSS)

The Alberta Government offers a limited number of Scholarships valued at $3000 each to 2nd year graduate students who are Canadian and are Alberta residents. Selection is based on eligibility and current GPA, all eligible students will be considered. Applications will be distributed to those students that are selected by the program for nomination.


Program Recommended Awards (PRA)

All current PRA awards can be found on the Graduate Studies award database.

Donor Awards:

EVDS Continuing Awards

  • EVDS MPlan Continuing Scholarships (up to 17) ranging in value from $1500-$4000, both Canadian and International students are eligible. There is no application. These are decided by the program and based on academic merit.

Book Award

  • Andrei Nicolai Book Award (1) is presented each year to either a planning or landscape architecture student who has excelled in the study of sustainable urban design.

Application deadline for most PRA awards is May 1st.

Solar Energy Society of Canada Inc (SESCI) ’84 Scholarship, deadline is November 15th

Study Abroad Scholarships

MPlan students who register for an EVDS Study Abroad Program in the fall of their senior year and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 will receive an EVDS Study Abroad Scholarship. There is no application, the amount varies year to year depending on funds available.

The Madeleine King Planning Award for International Studies valued at $2000 is awarded to an MPlan student undertaking a study abroad program, there is no application, the decision is based on academic merit and is decided by the program. A student will not receive this award and an EVDS Study Abroad Scholarship.

The International Office on campus also offers a study abroad award. It is variable in amount and students are only eligible to receive it once. Students in Los Angeles Block Week are also eligible to apply for this award. For more information visit the website: International Study Travel Grant


Conference and Event Travel Award

If you are travelling to present your work in person at a conference or other scholarly event you can apply for the EVDS Conference and event Travel Award.

Applications are accepted twice yearly, April 15th and October 15th

*The Faculty of Graduate Studies also offers a travel award to present work or research at a conference. This is available to both Canadian and International students.


Convocation Medal

APPI Danny Makale Silver Medallion (1) is awarded to the top graduating Master of Planning student.
