Personal Statement

After practicing landscape architecture and planning with private sector firms in Alberta and Manitoba, I concentrated in urban design.  The Urban Lab at the Faculty of Environmental Design is the physical setting for my research at the university, and I maintain a professional practice (Sandalack + Associates Inc. urban design/landscape architecture/planning) through which I attempt to integrate my research with the practical realities of contemporary urban and landscape planning and design. Involvement with local and international design review bodies includes co-chair of the City of Calgary Urban Design Review Panel (since 2004), and standing Chair of the Jury for the International Federation of Landscape Architects Design Competition (since 2003).

My research, teaching and practice focus on several topics:

  • Sustainable urban design: innovative neighbourhood design, small town planning and design, city studies
  • Urban morphology: qualities, urban form and physical activity, typology of the public realm
  • Landscape planning: open space planning, site planning, environmental planning
  • Sense of place: local and regional identity, place studies
