Student Job Opportunity: makeCalgary Coordinator

Job Description

The Coordinator is the lead administrative resource and support person for the Steering Committee and the three makeCalgary Working Groups centred in the areas of research, learning, and community engagement. The Coordinator will provide leadership and facilitation for the delivery of the makeCalgary program, and serve as the primary communication link both internal and external to the University.

They will be the primary contact point for makeCalgary and act as a liaison and resource for internal stakeholders at a variety of levels within the institution as well as external stakeholders. They will be expected to attend all Steering Committee and Working Group meetings and provide administrative support and continuity between meetings. They will work with faculty researchers, graduate students, and administrative staff across a number of faculties to assist in the development and delivery of the makeCalgary programming and initiatives. The specific tasks/duties of the Coordinator will be developed in consultation with the Steering Committee and the Faculty Operations Manager.

The makeCalgary Coordinator is the primary resource for makeCalgary, an interdisciplinary community based research platform that brings faculty researchers and graduate students from multiple faculties including Medicine, Social Work, and Environmental Design together with the City of Calgary, community partners, and industry professionals to help design a bright future for Canada’s most enterprising city.

makeCalgary organizes its activities around a series of themes that define a great city. To date these have included vibrancy, resilience, health, and equity. The current theme is makeCalgary Walkable. The Coordinator will work closely with the makeCalgary Steering Committee and Working Groups to facilitate this interdisciplinary model of research, learning, and community engagement. They will provide key operational leadership to ensure the success of the projects, programs, and initiatives under the makeCalgary banner. This will include organizational, administrative, operating budget and communication activities within the Faculty, University and external community.

Job Requirements

Excellent skills in managing large, collaborative projects in a timely and successful manner is essential.

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability in building and maintaining relationships

Project Management

This position will be responsible for the operational management of existing and new projects, programs and budgets for makeCalgary. This position will be expected to provide progress reports, meeting minutes, coordinate and attend all meetings to record action items and decisions and to follow up with meeting participants to ensure timely and appropriate action is taken on commitments and ensures action items originating from the Steering Committee are undertaken and completed in a timely fashion as required. The Coordinator will engage key stakeholders (internal and external) in the work and results of makeCalgary initiatives. The Coordinator will also assist in expanding the contacts for makeCalgary community based projects and research.


This position will be expected to consult and coordinate initiatives with Communication and Community Relations support personnel. Where appropriate the Coordinator will participate in meetings with members of the media and colleagues in the University Relations Office.


22.06-32.52 per hour, Contract/Limited Term
