If you wander through the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) this month, you’re sure to see an unusual and beautiful site.

The University of Calgary’s EVDS is known for exhibits and student work that combine form and function with creative innovation. The latest project from the professional Master of Architecture degree students is no different.

In December, our Faculty of Environmental Design showcased work of Studio 3, the third design studio which involved all first year MArch students.

How do we divert a large amount of housing demolition waste from Calgary’s landfills? EVDS Associate Professor, Josh Taron’s ongoing research into this topic is featured in the latest UCalgary video & story.

On November 8, two EVDS graduate planning students, Adetoun Osuntogun and Madison Smith, and their instructor, Harry Harker visited the Langdon Elementary School to celebrate World Town Planning Day with the Grade 7 students.

At inaugural Calgary Interprofessional Challenge during Nov. 4-6, students from the faculties of Environmental Design and Nursing, the Cumming School of Medicine, the Haskayne School of Business, and the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science formed six interprofessional teams as they developed ways to help seniors live in their homes longer.

A third year PhD student Mohamed Imam presented a research paper “Towards Resource Generative Skyscrapers,” a joint work with his supervising architecture professor Branko Kolarevic at an international conference called “Cities to Megacities: Shaping Dense Vertical Urbanism” held in October in China.

A newly published book (2016) Planning Canada: A Case Study Approach edited by Ren Thomas and published through Oxford University Press features work by three EVDS faculty members and provides an antidote to the former lack of planning techniques, cultural contexts and legal frameworks unique to Canada. Primarily intended for undergraduate students in planning, geography, and urban studies, the case studies offer enough depth to be used in graduate courses as well.

Congratulations to Kristen Lien (MArch ’08), Kate Allen (MArch ’09) and Kelly Morrison (MArch ’09) of FRANK Architecture for being named in the class of 2016 Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine.

Join us on Thursday, November 17, 2016 to learn more about the programs offered through the Faculty of Environmental Design.
