EVDS prof, Kris Fox, wins 2017 CSLA National Award of Excellence

Congratulations to Kris Fox, RLA, CSLA, assistant professor in the Landscape Architecture Program, for being honoured by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) for his work on the Outdoor PLAYbook, an online how-to guide on research and best practices for designing innovative, sustainable and safe school grounds. CSLA National Awards of Excellence are given to inspiring and diverse landscape architecture projects that demonstrate distinctive design, ground-breaking research and sustainable landscape management across Canada.

Kris won in the communication category for creating a user-friendly web resource that offers research and best practices for improving the physical, social and ecological outdoor play and learning environments for public elementary school grounds.

“In Canadian elementary schools, parent groups fundraise, plan, design and build play areas on community school grounds. I started this project because I saw a genuine need for these parents to readily access current knowledge and best practices to explore their design options prior to seeking formal school board approval for construction,” explained Fox. “This project started with the Vancouver School Board, prior to my taking a faculty position with the University of Calgary in 2016. My hope is, by winning the CSLA award, this project will gain the momentum it needs to spread to Calgary and Alberta and eventually to the rest of the country. It’s a great honor to have this work recognized by my peers.”
