PERSONAL STATEMENT

With an underlying belief that architecture is, at its most fundamental, a cultural and human based activity, I have sought, through my research an understanding of the cultural and social contexts that result in built form. Previous investigations into themed environments have focused on the question of authenticity in the built environment, both inside and out of the gates of the circumscribed theme park, through which I have been formulating a theoretical and practical position towards the authentic.  These explorations into themed environments have provided me with a background and insights into the relationships between culture and design, which further led to an interest in the role of tourism as it relates to design development.  First explored through a chapter in the book Tourism Revisited:  International Colloquium on Architecture and Cities #2, this line of study has provided the opportunity to further understand the consumerist and cultural underpinnings of architectural design.  Most recently I have co-authored two editions of Wine By Design, a professional book that posits the intrinsic relationships between tourism and design now prevalent in the winery industry.  Recent research into the design impulses behind roadside attractions offers another lens through which to explore the nature of the meaningful environment within the contemporary context of a consumerist culture.
