Judy Stewart, lawyer, former Mayor of the Town of Cochrane, and PhD candidate, presents on Low-Impact Development: Opportunities and Barriers for Implementation in Alberta.
In water-scarce southern Alberta, land use planning students may embrace the idea and language of using low impact development strategies and technologies in developing areas to retain and use storm drainage onsite. Alberta’s current legislative regime however, does not enable low impact development as standard industry practice.
Stewart's presentation will provide a brief overview of the emergence of “low impact development” in Alberta, and some opportunities, strategies and technologies associated with retention and use of storm drainage within developing areas as a water supply source. Mostly, the presentation will examine the barriers that currently exist in Alberta’s laws and regulations that must be addressed on a priority basis if low impact development is to become the norm in storm drainage management for improved watershed and aquatic health.
