Australia Program

Royal Melbourne Institute of TechnologyAustralia offers unique opportunities for environmental design study. Its climate has encouraged the development of cutting edge sustainability practices not only in all expressions of design but through all aspects of society. Its culture and history is a unique blend of aboriginal, European, and Asian influences that serve as a valuable, and very relevant, precedent for students planning on working within a Canadian context.

In past years design students have worked alongside Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) sessionals and Australian practitioners including: Urs Bette – a cutting edge architect with an international repute; Gavin Malone - an accomplished Australian environmentalist and artist; and Rob Adams - Director of City Design at the City of Melbourne. Studying Australian design, students assess possibilities for design/build urban-based design challenges, as well as a project in a unique eco-village.

For the first time in Winter 2013, Master of Planning students  will have the opportunity to study in Australia, with a job shadowing component at the City of Melbourne. The Australia Program has therefore been tailored accordingly.

What Courses do I Take?

MArch students enroll in the following courses for Winter 2013:

  • EVDA 782.09 Senior Research Studio (2 HCE)
  • EVDS 683.37 Design Build Studio (1 HCE)
    • The design-build project based in the arts 2011 Australia Design-buildeco-village, Aldinga, South Australia, involves a unique collaboration between our students, the local indigenous people (the Kuarna), the residents, and environmental artist, Gavin Malone. In a 4-week period students will design a structure, consult with community as well as indigenous cultural leaders, and construct the structure. It is a rare and unique opportunity to experience first-hand the cultural, climatic, and social dimensions of design in a vibrant international destination.
